“Sinners” came out on April 18, 2025, directed by Ryan Coogler. It revolves around twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Micheal B. Jordan), returning to their hometown, and opening up a juke joint as an escape for those enslaved in Jim Crow Mississippi, 1932. Tagging along is their cousin Sammie/Preacher Boy (Miles Caton), who gets an opportunity to showcase his gift of singing at the joint. After the twins reconnect with friends from their past, later that night leads with a bloodthirsty company (vampires) striking the joint, causing some deaths till the sun rises. Also side note, beware watching this with others, especially family members, as it’s rated R, which can make things a little awkward…

Inspiration of Film/Background Info: Ryan Coogler said this movie allowed him to explore new creative ground like simultaneously shooting using Ultra Panavision 70 (wider and more cinematic look) and IMAX (sharper details and colors), meaning that only specific movie theaters can show how the movie was originally intended due to some/most theaters not having special projectors—marking Sinners to stand out as it’s the first movie to use both formats together like this.Going more in depth with the innovation, the film somewhat backpacks off From Dusk Till Dawn, a 1996 film. But more heavily, the inspiration for creating this film came from his Uncle James and his maternal grandfather, as it explores the dichotomy relationship he had between them, which leads to another underlying message of dichotomy he’s faced throughout his upbringing in Oakland.

This movie is so encapsulating as it can carry so many emotions with the storyline being layered with rich and subtle messages. It goes beyond the surface, reflecting themes of racial violence, highlighting the influence of music and how it embodies strength and resilience, and many more points. Moreover, the music being beautifully arranged as it blends tunes on different genres like vampire-themed eerie tunes, Delta blues, jazz, and a kick of country—enhancing the suspense and surprise scares while it captures a beautiful scenario through the haunting sounds, heavily influencing emotions strongly as much as the visuals of the film displays.

Sinners is very well written and executed considering it is odd and unique with the mixture of genres that’s so unexpected, especially from the work that’s usually done by Ryan Coogler. The cinematography had been beautifully captured, the acting was phenomenal, and the dialogue was as strong and powerful as the visuals while also incorporating humor throughout the film easing the audience. Casting was at first questionable (at least for me) but after seeing the performance, I for sure underestimated it. Everything about this movie is depicted with so much intent and detail within the story.
Overall, the movie has a fresh storyline compared to other past popular movies which have continuous stories like Wicked and Mufasa: The Lion King that are already derived from past movies. No disrespect intended, but Sinners bring an innovative and fresh creation that’s desperately needed in today’s film industry as they lack creativity and original concepts. Sinners truly deserve the hype and should be on everyone’s watch list.
