The Oakland Roots Sports Club: a Team with a Purpose

The Oakland Roots Sports Club is an up-and-coming professional soccer team based in Oakland, California. The Oakland Roots was founded in 2018 and weren’t known more for their soccer team, but rather for trying to build a stronger and safer community for Oakland through sports. Oakland Roots compete in the USL Championship (United Soccer League), the men’s second-division professional soccer league.

What makes the Oakland Roots special, you might ask? The Oakland Roots’ mission and goal is to have a safe community that represents Oakland and its people. The team focuses more on the impact of the community rather than the strength of their team. They are also very big on culture and identity pride and support this by celebrating rich cultures through art, music, and more. From their players, staff, and fans, the Oakland Roots team is all about inclusion in the community and wants to give everyone a voice.

Another big motive for them is that they prioritize purpose over profit. This means that the people in the organization have more than just money on their minds; they genuinely want to build a safer and stronger community for soccer and sports in general in Oakland. In short, the Oakland Roots are special and stand out because of their mission and purpose. They are for the people, not just for the points on the scoreboard.

The team works on bringing people together and fighting for social justice in Oakland. They support local causes, share their opinions on important issues, and want to make Oakland a better place for everybody. The games are very exciting—a stadium filled with passionate, full-of-heart, and loyal fans who know how to cheer, sing, and scream for their team.

The Oakland Roots community has helped bring soccer together in Oakland and made it a safe and fun environment. From the moment you arrive at the stadium, you can feel the energy: drums beating, fans cheering, people selling and buying food, listening to music before the game—stuff like that makes the place feel five times more electric. Even if you’re not a huge soccer fan, like me, the crowd is very diverse and welcoming to all fans and viewers.

With the food trucks, live music, and local artists, it’s more than just a USL soccer game—it’s an Oakland experience for most. My experience at an Oakland Roots game at the Oakland Coliseum was a great time. The moment we showed up in the parking lot, you could already feel the vibe of the game. I saw families come together, food vendors, live music—you could feel the presence of an Oakland Roots game. All the fans hollering, people gossiping about teams, people excited to be there—you could feel all of it.

One thing that I think is really good is the diversity at these games. It’s not just one race or just soccer fans—people from all around the Bay Area came to the Oakland Coliseum to see the Oakland Roots. Oakland Roots has a strong mission to use sports for positive social change in their community. They focus on community, justice, and unity more than the game itself, and that’s what makes the Oakland Roots stand out. The feeling at a game is electric, with passionate fans and full of Oakland pride. These games bring people together through thought, culture, music, and their love for soccer.
